Should You Take A Relationship Quiz?

Everyone's seen one at some time or another. You'll find them in magazines, in books, and online. They claim to offer you special insight into your relationship. What we're talking about, of course, is the relationship quiz. They are very popular, but are they helpful?

There are many reasons such a quiz might be helpful, but there are just about as many reasons why they might not be, and even why they may be harmful. Often, however, this is not about the quiz itself, but rather about the people involved and how they use the test.

A popular type of relationship quiz often found in magazines is one used to determine your compatibility with your partner. These usually rely on questions that show personality traits and other qualities that you may both share, or that can be said to be compatible.

These are popular because we are often looking for reassurance that we have made the right choice, especially if we are experiencing a rough patch in our relationship. However, these quizzes are usually quite superficial, and they do little to actually answer if you are compatible with one another.

If you look at them as a way to start a conversation, they can certainly benefit your relationship. If it is merely for a bit of entertainment that neither of you take seriously, this can be bonding and can also be beneficial. However, when these quizzes are taken too seriously or are used to point out incompatibilities or faults, they can definitely hurt the relationship.

Another popular topic for a magazine quiz relates to figuring out if your partner is cheating. These are great hooks for selling magazines, but can be very destructive. If you already suspect that your partner is cheating, this quiz can at least help you see if your suspicions have a solid basis. However, if you have no reason to suspect something, this quiz can do little for you except interject some doubt where there was none before.

The quizzes in magazines tend to be short and as mentioned before, superficial. If you are concerned about a specific aspect of your relationship, or if you simply want to help your relationship move to a deeper level, then this is the type of quiz you should look for. Of course, the benefits will come only if you approach the quiz with a specific goal in mind, and if you use the results in a positive manner.

Some of the biggest benefits provided by an in-depth relationship quiz include reassurance that you are going down the right path, a deeper understanding of yourself, your partner, and your relationship, and the ability to use that information to grow closer in your relationship. Even if you have a partner who is unwilling to participate in taking the quiz, if you use it to better yourself, your relationship will surely follow.
